Abstract

This article, the result of a survey carried out in different places in the Basque speaking zone of Navarra (Iragi, Eugi, Mezkiritz, Auza, Etxaleku- Amaiur, Oderitz, Beuntza, Urritzola, lrañeta, LizarragaErgoiena, Leitza, Abaurrea-Gaina, Zaraitzuko Esparza and Jaurrieta), attempts to find out exactly what the Basque speakers of these villages understand by terms like lruñerria, Kokoa, lruinkokoa, lruñeko kokoa. The majority understood 'Cuenca de Pamplona' (Valley of Pamplona) or 'native of the Cuenca', though other interpretations included 'a person who is rather dim', 'somebody who does not speak Basque', 'the middle zone of Navarra', the 'Ribera' or south of Navarra and natives of those two areas. Then Estelleria which refers to 'Tierra Estella' (Land of Estella) and finally Pardixerria(k) and Pardixa( k) which are the names given to the area between Aezkoa, Salazar, and Sanguesa as well as to the natives of the area.
