From excavation to on-site exhibition: the case of the mediaeval Chapel of Virgen del Pe

Abstract

This document describes the excavation, study and valorisation of the mediaeval Chapel of Virgen del Pero in Peralta, Navarre, following several archaeological campaigns between 2000 and 2025. It details the architectural, funerary and structural findings, and the challenges involved in conserving and creating a exhibition for viewing at an open-air site exposed to environmental risks. The project involved the collaboration of archaeologists, technicians and local institutions, prioritising preventive conservation and minimal intervention. The creation of the exhibition aims to make the history of the site understandable and revitalise the local cultural and tourism offer. Implementation is being carried out in stages, with criteria of reversibility and sustainability to guarantee long-term preservation.
