Abstract

In 2024, work began on reviewing and characterizing the protohistoric settlement in the Orba Valley (Navarra) using a non-invasive archaeological methodology. This involved remote sensing, pedestrian, geophysical, and metal surveys, as well as stratigraphic and chronological core drilling. In 2025, work was carried out at four key sites: Kasteluxar (Olóriz), San Juan (Leoz), Aranbero, and San Quirico (Pueyo). Preliminary results have allowed researchers to define the complex urban layout of the Kasteluxar hillfort through a multi-system geophysical survey; to understand the stratigraphic sequence at the San Juan site, which spans from the Iron Age to Late Antiquity, documenting a gap during the Roman period; to define the defensive and residential structure of the Aranbero settlement; and to chronologically separate the occupation of San Quirico from the adjacent hillfort.
