Abstract
This paper aims to establish the relationship between, on the one hand, the case of the Lanz bandits, who threatened the safety of the roads and the port of Velate (Navarra, Spain) since 1810, and the arrest, hanging and dismemberment of several of them ordered by the courts in 1817-1818; and, on the other hand, the famous masquerade of the Lanz rural carnival that has preserved to our days, that can be interpreted and understood in light of such events.
