Abstract

Celebrations in Viana have never been understood without bull events, but the first written references date from the XVI century. Bulls were used, in the Plaza del Castillo or del Coso, to celebrate the festivities of the Patron Saints and the monarchy, the achievements of distinguished residents and the arrival in the town of illustrious visitors. The town itself and the Parishes of Santa María and San Pedro let bulls loose on rope or in the square. Magnificent buildings were erected in the Plaza del Coso in the XVII century: the bull balconies of the local council, the church and the local nobility.
