Abstract

In centuries gone by, the eminently agricultural society of Viana would resort to the intercession of the saints at times of drought and plagues of harmful insects for the fields and other needs. Every year, crosses would be put by the fields and holy water brought from the San Gregorio Ostiense Sanctuary in Sorlada would be sprinkled and, at times, its relics and silver head would visit the city. Litany processions would take place to the different shrines of the locality and nearly every year, for one reason or another, rogations to the favourite saints would be made: Santa Mary Magdalene, the Patron Saint of the city, San Juan del Ramo, Our Lady of the Caves and Santo Cristo de...
