Abstract

In Gipuzkoa, during the 16th and 17th centuries, rural clerics danced in the street with men and women from the local elites . This situation, similar both in the rest of Euskal Herria and in Europe, changed during the 17th century. The reprimands of the bishops, the instruction of the clergy and the publication of edicts and pastoral letters (such as the one written by Bishop Juan Grande in 1691, unknown until now and which is reported in this article) were the causes of this gradual change of attitude.
