Abstract

These pages deal with social roles of men and women in Navarrese rural society in the first decades of the XXth century. The main source, a collection of letters addressed to his mother by a young man during his military service in the North of Africa, is here related to the data provided by bibliography. We obtain thus information about gender roles in the context of domestic space (family, domestic tasks, etc.), as well as in a larger social context (education, rites of passage, work, religious life, etc.). Moreover, private letters afford the point of view of the characters, common people whose voices are rarely able to reach the researcher, due to the scarcity of this kind of written sources.
