El carnaval en Navarra [Carnival in Navarre]

Abstract

This article provides an overview of the main features of Carnival in Navarre, a festive celebration of pagan origin characterised by the transgression of everyday reality, certain forms of violence and unrestrained partying in the face of approaching austerity in the form of Lent. In addition to analysing the disappearance and recovery of carnival in Navarre, the article reviews the different animals involved in the festival and gives some present-day examples of carnival in Navarre.
