Onomástica vasca en La Rioja

Abstract

The beginning of this article is about the presence of Basque language in La Rioja and the different interpretations about it. Then, it líes on data given by the onomastics from the ancient epigraphy. The result is close relationships between them and the ones given by che Basque Aquitanian onomastics.

To finish with, we place -with natural reservations- the Basque language in pre-roman La Rioja, in contrast to former theories considering that place completely Celtic; at the same time, we point out that the presence of the Basque in La Rioja quite probably stood until the beginning of che modern period.
