Léxico vasco residual de Artajona
Abstract
Artajona, a town considered, from a linguistic point of view, Spanish for more than two hundred years in spite of evidence of bilingualism up until the 19th century, preserves an extensive and interesting wealth of words of Basque origin which are currently used in modern-day Spanish speech by the inhabitants. However, some of them are only used by the older population, having fallen into disuse by the younger members. The process of collecting the words combined the author’s own knowledge with oral surveys carried out on different people and followed by the confirmation of other informants. The article comprises three annexes, the first containing the main list, the second setting out a series of words of uncertain origin, and the third is a list of the Basque toponyms of the area.
