Abstract

The Basque word gizon "man" may - like some Celtic words for "man", such as the Irish word duine - come from an Indoeuropean root *ĝhponios. It cannot, however, be a Celtic loanword. It was probably borrowed from an older Indoeuropean language which J. Corominas has called sorothaptic.
