Abstract

This article aims to highlight the fact that the Basque language, which in a more primitive era was largely based on prefixes, has, over time, evolved towards suffix forms as a result of the action of Basque speakers, who, most probably for centuries, have proved agents for suffixes, those previously-existing prefix forms losing all meaning to them. The process is analysed in three different fields: articles, demonstratives and verbs. Schuchardt’s opinion concerning the prefixes e- and i- with article value on nouns has been taken into account in the drafting of this hypothesis.
