Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyse the evolution of Basque names of the houses in the valleys of Erro and Esteribar (Nafarroa), areas where the Basque language has suffered a deep erosion. With the “oiconimos” of the years 1644, 1726 and 2001, we have tried to make a comparative study of the evolution of such house-names during this time. We have also tried to give the etymo[1]logy of those names, classifying them into different groups: those based on anthroponyms, toponyms and patronymics, and those which describe the characteristics of the houses, etc. Finally we give the list of the villages of each valley and the names of the houses from that period.
