Abstract

Although the intrinsic importance in Basque literature of Axular’s Gero (1643) means that any kind of problem whatsoever related to it is quick to awaken the interest of scholars, those concerning the originality of the work have always been, and still are, those to stir the greatest passions. The present article revises certain parallelisms, of both a thematic and textual nature, with ascetic works by earlier authors foreign to the Euskara written tradition which can be ascertained throughout the Navarran writer’s book. Similarities with texts by Fray Luis de Granada are particularly highlighted.
