Abstract

The publication of Mitxelena’s Fonética histórica vasca (Historical Basque Phonetics) and Holmer’s diligent and long-awaited edition of El idioma vasco hablado (The Spoken Basque Language) caught most of the speaker’s attention at the 1962-63 biennial. Whatsmore, Mitxelena was made secretary of The Academy of the Basque Language and his words were crucial to the solution of the Institution’s internal conflicts. This was one of the most active periods of the linguist from Rentería’s life. Named technical director of the Seminario Julio de Urquijo, he fostered the creation of the Anuario de Filología Vasca (Basque Philology Yearbook), albeit without distancing himself from the commitments he already had with Egan and the Boletín de la Real Sociedad Vascongada de Amigos del País. He combined all this with his normal teaching work.
