Abstract

Assuming the existence of the Basque zanga, and its onomastic use attested, the problem of its etymology is tackled, offering as the most possible theory its remote origin in the Indo-European *sengh-, which was probably introduced into Basque through the Celtic languages. The etymology of the Spanish zanja is also discussed, proposing the simpler solution than that advocated by J. Corominas and J.A. Pascual which accredited its origin to the same Indo- European root as that mentioned above.
