Abstract

In 1645 the post of vicar of San Cernin's Church in Pamplona was filled with a priest who did not speak the Basque language. In view of the newness, the Basque parishioners brought an action requesting for a priest knowledgeable about their language, with whom they could confess. Father José Moret, S. (1615-1687), borne in that Church, and future author of the "Annals of the Kingdom of Navarra" and other historical works, took part as a witness and testified that only one of every fifteen people he confessed did it in Basque language. That revealed that he spoke that language, such as many other priests and people from Pamplona at that time.
