El vascuence en Gallipienzo y la Val de Aibar (1571)

  • José María Jimeno Jurío [Spain]

Abstract

The proceedings of a trial from the Archivo Diocesano show us the situation of Basque in 1571 in the Valley of Aibar. The neighbours of Gallipienzo spoke normally in Basque and some of them did not know Spanish. On the other hand in Caseda, a village nearby, the population was Spanish-speakin, although many Basque-speaking neighbours and shepherds went to Gallipienzo to confess. In those years the neighbours of Sada, Eslava and Lerga were also Basque speakers and they considered Gallipienzo (as Aibar, Sangüesa and Caseda) romance-speaking area.
