La enseñanza municipal de Fuenterrabía en el siglo XVIII

Abstract

Francisco Xavier de Aramburu's contract for the post of teacher at the Fuenterrabian municipal school in 1796 is commented on in the article «Municipal Education in Fuenterrabia in the 18th Century.

Besides the document itself which is transcribed, special attention is given to the following aspects:

a) Definition of the socio-economic status of the people involved in the contract.

b) Definition of the academic, religious, and administrative features of the Fuenterrabian Municipal School.

c) Definition of the work and administrative requirements of the post of teacher at the Municipal school.

d) An analysis of «the punishment of the rings» as a means of learning Spanish and at the same time the discrimination of Euskera the language spoken by the majority of the population of Fuenterrabia at the end of the 18th century.
