Note sur l'origine du nom des Kirghizes

  • Michel Morvan [France]

Abstract

The author wants to show the origin of the turkish people's name Kirghiz. In some chinese chronicles was this people named Kirkun, which gives us the possibility to extract the word kun of it, the meaning of which is "man or human being". That is to say, the Kirghiz are "the men of the steppe" (kir = steppe). Thanks to the chinese chronicles, we can deduce the sense of the turkish word -ghiz or qïz, kïz that should be "man, human being" too. It would be of great interest to compare this word with the basque word gizon "man" or its base *giz-/giza.
