Keywords: Basque, multilingualism, education, language ideologies, language attitudes

Abstract

This mixed methods study analyzes the beliefs and attitudes of pre-service teachers at the Faculty of Education and Sports (UPV/EHU) regarding the levels of competence, usefulness, difficulty, importance, and identification toward languages. Findings highlight that they feel multilingual, with Basque and Spanish as their main languages and English as secondary in competence, identity, and importance. English is gaining space while Basque is often perceived as receding, which affects its use and learning. Generally, they express a desire for greater use of Basque and to root it more deeply in their identity yet lament the inevitable sociolinguistic and structural obstacles.
