Genero-alborapena Elia itzultzaile automatikoan, euskaratik gaztelaniarako norabidean [Gender bias from Basque into Spanish by the machine translator Elia]
Abstract
It is well known that machine translation models learn from the examples used to train them and replicate the biases and stereotypes present in the texts. This is an issue that becomes even more pronounced when translating from languages without grammatical gender to those that do, such as from Basque to Spanish. In this study, we analyze gender bias. Specifically, we have created lists of adjectives and professions typically associated with feminine and masculine stereotypes, compiling numerous examples across three textual genres. Our goal has been to analyze these findings and provide an assessment that can inform future improvements in machine translation systems.
