Egitura arazleak mendebaldeko euskaraz: arazo eta eragin [Causative structures in the western dialect of Basque: arazo and eragin]
Abstract
In this article, I analyze the causative structures of western Basque, specifically the morpheme arazo and the verb eragin, aiming to determine if they resemble or differ from the causative arazi found in remaining varieties. On one hand, I show that the western causative structures are monoclausal, based on diagnostics commonly used across languages. I also argue that the structure [-t(z)ea + eragin] is biclausal. On the other hand, whereas in other Basque varieties the causee is marked based on a Hierarchy of Grammatical Functions, I argue that in western Basque the marking depends on the Animacy Hierarchy because animate causees are marked with the dative case.
