Aitzin-euskararen kontsonantismoa [The consonantism of old Basque]
Abstract
In this article, which is based on the reconstruction which Michelena forwarded for old Basque, we attempt to reconstruct the old phonological system of this very language, but referring to a previous period to the one Michelena reconstructs and which we can call “Proto-Old Basque”. To this end, we base ourselves on the progress which Joseba Lakarra has made over recent years regarding the morpho-phonological and etymological analysis of the old disyllabic roots of the Basque language. On the one hand, we accept that these disyllabic roots were, in an ancient epoch, compound periphrastic structures from two different roots. We also believe, however, that this analysis opens up new horizons for internal phonological reconstruction insofar as comparisons of the alternation of the forms which these monosyllabic elements present according to phonetic context can help us elucidate what may have been the original form.
