El vascuence en Urraúl Alto (1785)
Abstract
The Navarraise Valley of Urraul Alto, in the west of the merindad of Sangüesa, borders on Spanish speaking regions. The linguistic reality of two villages leadas us to infer that, around 1785, the neighbours were basque speakiers with a majority who could speak no other language and a minority speaking Spanish with difficulty. Romance started to spread in this period, mainly through children from the schools, servants and sorne priests that preached in Spanish at he pilgrimages to Santa Fe for the pilgrims from Spanish speaking areas.
