Tres cartas en euskara escritas por un ferrón de Bera

  • Ricardo Urrizola Hualde [Spain]

Abstract

The present article tells of three letters written in Basque, one dated 1674 and the other two 1676, by an ironworker from Bera, called Juan Bautista de Iturria. The three letters were sent by Juan Bautista to a resident of Ziburu, Juantxo de Bereau, who appears as a regular supplier of food and also, in times of hardship, as a provider of money. These letters were used as evidence by another neighbour of Bera, Juan de Urdinso, in a lawsuit concerning the property of a pack mule. Urdinso saw the need to prove that the promissory note for the purchase of the mule was written by Juan Bautista de Iturria and presented the three letters written and signed by Juan Bautista before the court as proof of its authenticity.
