El significado oculto de la palabra «Euzkadi»

  • Javier Zabaltza Pérez-Nievas Historiador. [Spain]

Abstract

In this article, the author studies the etymology of “Euzkadi”, the name with which Sabino Arana, the founder of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), christened The Basque Country in 1896, and which has undergone universal diffusion. Despite Arana’s claims, “Euzkadi” bears no relation to eguzki, which means “sun”, but is merely a deformation of the name Vizcaya.
