Abstract

In this article the author deals first with the present use and the future of the familiar treatment (tuteo) in the Basque language, all of that within the frame of the diachronic analysis postulated by R. Brown and A. Gilman (1961). Of the two diachronic hypothesis postulated by the mentioned North American authors, only the first one, referred to the tendency towards the symmetrical treatment in the 20th. century, seems to be fulfilled in broad outline in the present Basque language. Regarding the second hypothesis, it does not seem credible at all the tendency to the universalization of the "tuteo" in the Basque language. Next, the author analyzes some of the psicosociolinguistic variables that affect the use and the election of the treatment (age, sex, relationship and friendship are specially remarked) in the Basque language. Finally, the author notices certain specific uses (interior monologue, relationship between husband-wife, etc.) established in the Basque speaking community connected with the "tuteo" and the "usteo"•
