Enterramientos en decúbito prono de la iglesia de San Nicolás en Tudela (Navarra) [Prone burials of San Nicolás church in Tudela (Navarre)]

Abstract

In San Nicolas church of Tudela 168 burials have been inventoried, of which four were found face down (prone). The specialized bibliography is usually grouped between those that consider it something accidental and those that attribute it to a deliberate act of punishment or humiliation; but they do not assess cases within a church and according to religious inhumation rituals. Through an interdisciplinary methodology this work aims to obtain archaeological, anatomical-anthropological, and historical data, in order to know the causes of these prone burials inside the church, and contribute with it to the general interpretation of this phenomenon in history.
