Abstract

From 1965 onwards, a series of ideal conditions led to the restoration of the use of the disc-shaped funerary stelae to mark the place of burial in the cemetery of Auritz/Burguete. Firstly, the construction of this unique new cemetery created the need to identify the graves, given that the ordinance in force at the time prohibited the relocation of the old tombstones. A further motive was the initiative and response of a number of villagers. These people had a decisive influence on encouraging the use of this element in a period in which its use was not as widespread as in previous centuries or in present times.
