Producción y comercio de carbón vegetal en las Bardenas Reales de Navarra [Charcoal production and trade in Bardenas Reales in Navarre]

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and describe charcoal production and trade in Bardenas Reales in Navarre throughout history. In the absence of material evidence of this practice or anthracological studies, some written sources record the production, transport and trade of charcoal in the bordering towns. The impact of this practice on the Mediterranean forest that covered the region, which accelerated deforestation despite various attempts to stop and reverse it, is also depicted.
