Abstract

The Layas are farm tools, they’ve got two asymmetric points and are used by two farmers working at the same time, this features are something extraordinary that make this kind of tools uniques in Europe. Their historical use has been joined to the area of Basque cultural influence during different periods and thanks to their important farming features the Basque country has felt an extraordinary bond with the Layas, this feeling has been reflected in the religious art and thanks to the study of the religious  iconography about this tools and the ethnographic studies which are being developed nowadays we can discover some expressive and technical changes  happened from the Middle Ages in their way of use
