Abstract
As of the XVI century, Viana celebrated the events of the Spanish monarchy in all their glory: the births of princes and princesses, mourning the deaths of kings and queens, acclaiming new kings and weddings. The triumph of the monarchy’s forces were prayed for and thanks were given to God for victories at war. In addition to religious acts, such as mass and rogation, the Town Council laid on firework displays, dances, musical events, grotesque parades and, above all, bullfights, which the local population was so fond of. These acts were celebrated on a grand scale, particularly during the XVIII century, and the municipality spent such large sums of public money that the monarchy itself even tried to cut down...
