Abstract

The first data we have about the pelota game in Viana come from the sixteenth century. People played pelota at the castle, at the pelota wall of San Felices and in plaza del Coso. Some municipal edicts remind neighbours it was forbidden to play pelota on the walls of the churches of San Francisco, Santa María and Nuestra Señora de la Gracia.TheMunicipality built a specific pelota court (ble style, whith a frontis) in 1850, and in 1934 a left wall was added, taking advantage of the castle wall. Until 1888 players counted by juegos (games) or quinces (fifteen points); from then on, by thirty points. The City leased the pelota court to individuals with some particular conditions...
