El Monumento a los Caídos como dispositivo sinóptico: tres retóricas etnográficas en la ciudad de Pamplona/Iruñea [The Monument to the Fallen as a synoptic device: three ethnographic rhetorics in the city]
Abstract
In 1936, Pamplona/Iruñea’s rebel factions celebrated victory by erecting the illproportioned Monument to the Fallen which still presides over the city today. After implausibly fitting it out as an exhibition hall, the ultimate fate of the Monument, whether it should be kept as a memorial or a museum or whether it should be demolished, is now under debate. Both the present enormity of the monument in Pamplona life and this memorial process could be understood as a performative dispute in the city. But it is not possible to see this as an equidistant dispute or legitimate product of consensus because the monumental presence of Carlist-Francoist celebration means that the Monument stands as a great synoptic artefact which must be knocked...
