Bases para una etnozoología del tejón (Meles meles L.) con especial referencia en el ámbito cultural vasco
Abstract
We report data from ethnographical publications on traditional basque beliefs and uses of badgers. We found three different uses in the basque tradition; badger paws were used as amulet in order to protect children from evil eye, badger skins were used to protect bullocks and dairy cattle from illnesses, and badger fat was used for the cure of rheumatism. None of these uses has been found recorded in ancient literature (Plinius or Dioscorides) but we found similar uses in Europe. In addition, we comment some uses described in ancient literature.
