Elciego y la Rioja alavesa. Intento de explicación lingüística

Abstract

The Rioja Alavesa, and particulary its Eastern region was part of the old council of Laguardia is placed in an area inhabited by highly romanized Indoeuropean peoples, which most probably used a variety of Romance language, a mixture of Riojan, Navarrese and Castilian, could be explained according to the same facts. As the name Elciego is concerned, the most feasible explanation is that it comes from a Latin origin, *Ylicecu, which derives from the tree name Ylice “oak” and suffix –ecu, in a similar way to Samaniego, Lanciego, Barbariego, Casariego, et
