Bitoriano Huiziren Manual de Gramática Bascongada (1899)

Abstract

Exactly one hundred years ago, in 1899, the Etxarri priest Victoriano Huizi published his Manual de Gramática Bascongada (Basque language Grammar Manual). In addition to offering some biographical information about the author, we wish to comment on the book, i.e. offer our own point of view about the work. On the one hand, we try to reflect the author’s reasons and objective for writing it, basing ourselves always on the relevant information the author himself tends in the introduction and the notes he sent to the Etxarri Council; on the other, we analyze the grammatical content in itself, explaining it and, at the same time, trying to demonstrate the degree of afinity revealed with the spoken language from his locality.
