Abstract
The teaching methods in place wanted to avoid interferences between languages and defended teaching them separately. Therefore, translation was put aside from language teaching. By contrast, studies about language acquisition have proven the contrary: the speaker learns languages through transferences made among them. We think translating, as a tool, can have an interesting didactic value, because it it facilitates metalinguistic reflexion and the comparison among languages. The basque immersive educational system is multilingual, an appropriate environment for using translation. The objective of this report is to see where and how translation is implemented in secondary education’s Basque class. We have analyzed several examples taken from a school book. Besides evaluating them, we have also made some specific didactic proposals to benefit from the didactic value of translation.
