Primeras referencias a Guipúzcoa
Abstract
The placename Gipuzare appears in a brief text dated to the year 943 and preserved in the cartulary of San Millán de la Cogolla. It refers to a small settlement in the Montes de Oca (Burgos), which would have been founded or inhabited by settlers from the Basque province of Guipúzcoa. A similar construction (Gipuzauri) is found in the nearby Rioja Alta region. What is striking about this case, however, is the chronology, as the placename appears to predate by over 80 years the first references to Guipúzcoa, until now absent from the documentatión until 1025.
