Toponimia en lengua vasca de Marauri (Condado de Treviño)

Abstract

This study analyses Basque toponyms from Marauri, one of the forty-nine localities that make up the enclave of Treviño. With this purpose in mind, documentary sources from the XVII to the XX century, hitherto unpublished virtually in their entirety, have been used. The documents also reflect, therefore, the loss of Basque as the language spoken in the area, a process which took place over the second half of the XVIII century. The study has given way to the cataloguing and linguistic analysis of a hundred-and-sixteen toponyms of Basque characteristics. The authors have also catalogued Castilian-based toponyms –fewer in number, the older the documents studied–, though these are not looked into at any length in the present study due to limitations on space.

It is concluded that Marauri was historically a Basque-speaking locality corresponding, like the most part of Álava, to the western speech form, i.e. closely related to the dialectal variants from Bizkaia and Aramai
