Abstract

Though judging by the 1964-1966 letters Mitxelena’s health was far from good, he saw himself obliged to take part in a number of important acts. Despite the fact that he achieved places at the Torrelavega and San Sebastián institutes, the creation of the Indo-European professorship at Salamanca meant that other paths had to be followed. In his capacity as Secretary of the Academy of the Basque Language, he was close at hand in the introduction of new events, such as the return of “bertsolaris” (bard) contests, the creation of the “Euskalzaindia” (Academy of the Basque Language) teaching qualification and the launch of the adult Literacy Campaign.

Meanwhile Holmer set about research into other languages with no small resolve, moving to Australia before seeing the final publication of two previous works in the Basque Country and Ireland. His marriage and the birth of a son are two other events that ought to be highlighted from the same three-year period. Unfortunately, Holmer’s letters fail to appear in the Mitxelena family’s archive.
