Abstract

Walter Ong is a major figure in the study of oral style, and among other aspects of his work his interpretation lends new meaning and value to the formulaic style of oral literature. The production of the bertsolari constitutes an oral genre in Basque poetry. This paper sets out to analyse the oral and written production of bertsolari of the Enbeita family from the point of view of this formulaic style. It thus aims to discover and describe the common formulae used by Kepa Enbeita (1878-1942), his son Balendin Enbeita (1906-1986) and his grandson Jon Enbeita (1950-) in the imagery of their production as bertsolari.
