The stage in Mitxelena's career spanning the two years 1955-1956 covered by the correspondence offered here is marked by the conclusion of his dotorate course and the beginning of his thesis on historical Basque phonetics. The Academy of the Basque Language was experiencing a renaissance period: the 1 st Aránzazu Congress was held, the re-edition of Azkue's Dictionary was agreed upon and its preparation entrusted to the Renterian linguist, who in that period was also named a member of the prestigious Linguistic Society of París. Meanwhile, Professor Holmer moved to Columbia in arder to study the Indian language chocó. However, affected by a tropical disease, he saw himself obliged to return to Europe earlier than expected. He spent Christmas 1956 in che Basque Country.
