Estella/Lizarra: Toponimia

  • José María Jimeno Jurío Investigador y publicista [Spain]

Abstract

The town of Estella is the result of the coexistence of different cultures and languages within a small area: autochthonous Basque in Lizarra; “Francígena” in the borough which grew up in 1076; Navarrese in the villages of Parral and Arenal; and, Jewish in Elgacena. The toponymy could in some way reflect this heterogeneity and explain the characteristics of the languages of the different communities, above all during the Middle Ages. This is our intention on offering linguists this catalogue of rural terms.
