Abstract

The onomastics of the Monastery of Leire, set down in its Old Cartulary, stands out for its archaism, both because of the Basque Pyrenean, Romance and German christian names, family names and surnames, mainly due to the dating of its texts (IX-XII centuries) and also because of its references to the inhabitants of the deep valleys of Salazar and Roncal and those of the High Aragon. In general, we can state that the above mentioned onomastics has its own personality if we compare it with onomastics from Aragon, Asturias, Castile, Galicia and Catalonia.
