Abstract

The Demarcation of Vitoria and its jurisdiction from 1480-1486 constitutes one of the most important documents not only to get to know the economic life of the Llanada Alavesa at the end of the Middle Ages but for the study of the Basque language in that region as well, and that because of the great number of minor placenames and personal names which the document contains.

The method and the process followed in the writing of the Demarcation are explained in the present paper, and the complete list of the major and minor place names together with a quotation of their context is also set out. Up to the present time, this list is, because of its extent, the oldest known in the above mentioned region of Euskal Herria.
