Abstract

The name of the duck or the grebe is expressed in Basque, as in uralian, by themes of expressive nature where the initial is the labial voiceless p-. These terms seem to derive from the same root. We may remember that, generally speaking, basque does not voice initials of expressive terms (nor words under latin-roman influence). Finally, it seems that some proto-basque roots have not voiced because of the presence of a prothesis.
