Abstract

This paper intends to shed light on the tragic events occuring on the 30th of April and 1st of May of 1869 in Tafalla and that have become the foreground for the popular celebration of “la noche lagunera” that takes place during the Carnaval festivities in reference to Colonel José Lagunero Guijarro. Thanks to the inedited documents such as the official reports by Lagunero himself, those by the military police (“Guardia Civil”) and the opinion of the Minister of War, General Juan Prim i Prats (preserved in the General Military Archive of Madrid), and in addition all that has been published so far, we can now know what really happened...
